Tajikistan has one of the youngest populations in Central Asia, which can be viewed as a great opportunity for socio-economic development. Among Central Asian countries, Tajikistan continues to record by far the highest annual population growth (2.2%). At the same time, official unemployment in Tajikistan is 10.9%, which is also amongst the highest within Central Asian countries. What the demographic and unemployment figures show is that in Tajikistan, crucial opportunities as well as important risks co-exist within its labour market. In order to turn its relative demographic advantages into opportunities for growth, further progress on education reform must be made in Tajikistan. Against this background, the overall objective of our project is to contribute to the development of a modern education system, one which is able to prepare informed and qualified citizens who are ready for the “world of work” and who can contribute to greater political stability, economic prosperity and social well-being in Tajikistan. This will be supported by the achievement of the overall project purpose: to support an increase in the quality of education provision through improved teaching, learning assessment, and education system management.
